Born in Jalisco in 1985, Mexican photographer Juan Pablo Ampudia splits his time between Yucatán and Mexico City. His work delves into social and environmental issues across Latin America, with a distinct focus on resilience and the human experience.

In 2015, Ampudia embarked on a six-year personal project documenting his mother’s battle with Multiple Sclerosis—an incurable, degenerative disease that affects over 2.8 million people globally. From 2016 to 2018, he worked in Brazil, exploring themes of identity and conflict, and in 2019, driven by an awareness of diet’s environmental impact, he documented the worst rainforest loss in Brazil in a decade. Since 2020, his commitment to critical issues has led him to contribute to investigations into human rights abuses and environmental crimes in Mexico.

In 2021, Ampudia joined the VII Photo Agency’s Mentor Program and began developing a long-term project examining the cultural and environmental challenges facing the Yucatán Peninsula, including deforestation, agribusiness expansion, and aggressive real estate development. His work has been featured in renowned outlets such as National Geographic, the Los Angeles Times, Science Magazine, AARP, Insider, UNICEF, Gatopardo, El País, and Animal Político, among others.

That same year, he became the photo editor at Gatopardo, a Mexican magazine dedicated to narrative journalism, where he pitched, assigned, produced, and managed stories across platforms. He worked closely with editors, reporters, designers, illustrators, photographers, and videographers to craft impactful, multi-dimensional narratives.

Currently, Ampudia serves as the Visuals Editor at Global Press, a global news platform where local women reporters cover some of the world’s most critical issues from their communities. In this role, he leads the editorial strategy for all visual content, ensuring each story is told through high-quality photojournalism, video, graphics, and interactive elements. Ampudia also provides mentorship and training to reporters worldwide, hosts photo workshops, and explores innovative storytelling formats to keep the platform’s narratives fresh, impactful, and aligned with its mission to amplify underrepresented voices.
